Removing Asbestos: A Checklist
Home renovators must constantly worry about coming across the dreaded product asbestos when doing their work. The potential dangers and panic are a real concern, as well as the hassle of having to deal with the problem.
Remove asbestos yourself if you are game but first make sure that you have all of the neccessary equipment and correct protection to prevent any dangers in and out of the place infected with asbestos.. We have compiled the following list to make sure that you are ready to remove the asbestos:-
1. Keep the area clear from all people and pets and make sure no traffic can get into the area.
2. Make the area safe from accidents by removing akward objects such as furniture that might get in the way.
3. Keep everything remaining in the room covered with polyethylene film and held down with a quality tape that won't give way through the removal.
4. Make sure warning signs are visible around the building to prevent unexpecting people from entering.
5. Windows should be held shut and air gaps sealed with an adhesive tape to prevent air from moving around the site.
6. Where possible the mains power should be disabled.
7. Cover any places that dust might settle, such as general power outlets, air con units, items that the dropsheet can't reach.
8. To keep dust off your clothes and skin, wear disposable overalls (preferably with a hood), gloves and shoe coverings. This will ensure total protection.
9. Purchase a high quality respirator mask that is graded to work with asbestos and make sure that it is worn at all times. Ask for assitance at your hardware store to get the correct mask.
10. Use a low-pressure sprayer to wet the asbestos surface as you’re working with it. This will lower dust levels. Never use a high pressure jet.
11. Avoid eating, drinking and especially smoking while working with asbestos. You want to be fully cleaned down before you start inhaling anything!
12. Only use high quality heavy duty polyethylene bags when preparing asbestos for disposal. Make sure that each bag is well marked that it contains asbestos.
13. Keep your work area very clean while removing. This will prevent accidents and lower the amount of dust in the air.
14. The area should only be cleaned with a vaccuum fitted with a special High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter. Don't use the vaccum you use to clean the rugs every week as this may cause long term risk to the fibres.
