Why did I have to forget the wheel chock today?
I left a wheel chock in the garage yesterday after using it on my truck while I changed the oil. That was a big mistake. I run a small landscape company, so I have to cart around lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, shovels, weed-eaters and brooms on my trailer to make an existing yard look great. Occasionally I load up a Bobcat tractor for the heavy duty outdoor remodel and new construction work. It's a good idea to put a wheel chock on each of the tires on the back tires every time you park your truck, and especially when you have attached a trailer.
I had loaded up the equipment at the small space that I rent the night before with Harry, my right hand man and only full-time employee. The Cat and all my other tools needed for the day were ready to go when we met me the next morning and we hooked up the trailer by 7:30 a.m.
We took off to the new, small but elite neighborhood that was about 20 minutes away, discussing who was going to do the digging for the koi pond in front while the other one of us had to deal with the overbearing homeowner who had big plans for the back yard next. I mentioned to Harry that I had left a wheel chock in my garage and he said he would find a log to replace it. It was a sunny day as we backed into the slightly inclined driveway at the top that dropped significantly after about 20 feet when it made a turn to the garage. I put the truck in Park and stomped on the parking brake, and felt it "give" a bit more than normal.
"Dang, why did I forgot the wheel chock," I cursed under my breath, but Harry had already gotten out of the vehicle for his cell phone was ringing as we pulled in. As I walked around the back, Harry pointed to his phone and indicated that he would be a few minutes in discussion with his caller and wandered towards the back of the 3 ½ acre property for some privacy. I went to the front door to check in with the owner and knocked on the door. Mr. Meador answered the door in his robe, for we had arrived a few minutes earlier than our usual 8 am arrival. I turned around and looked at the truck, thinking that I could always get the second wheel chock out of the back of the truck to put in place when I returned and had to remove the Bobcat. He invited me in for a cup of coffee and I accepted, ready for the long conversation ahead.
We had been chatting for a few minutes when I thought I heard a yell and then my name being called loudly. I turned my head to try to determine if that was what I heard and with fear I rushed to the back door where the garage was positioned. I had noted that it was open when we arrived. As I opened the door I saw a sight that was moving in slow motion. Why did I have to forget the wheel chock today? I guess the parking brake pin had broken on my six year old truck with nearly 200,000 miles and lots of hauling on it. It was picking up speed rolling into the backyard, veering off the driveway with the Bobcat bouncing around as the trailer crossed the somewhat rocky and brushy terrain. Thank goodness for cedar trees because after about 100 yards the back end of the trailer ran into one and jack-knifed the truck and trailer, sending the Cat flying into the air and landing on brush. I hung my head and shook it. Why did I have to forget the wheel chock today?
Here's some advice for landscaping companies. Use your wheel chocks. They're inexpensive at around $15-30 depending on their size and characteristics. They're resistant to oils, fuels and solvents and easy to throw in the back of the truck. You put them in place on the center of the tire on the back end of the truck that should be facing downhill. A wheel chock is a crucial part of your business and is effective when used properly and positioned correctly. You don't want to end up like me, having to explain to the homeowner that there might be a small delay because you forgot your chock.
